Slipping in Slime for MADD

Members of DoSomething, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) spent Saturday May 17, 2015 setting up and assisting in the second Crazy Lil’ Run near the Dorothea Dix Property.IMG_9260IMG_9289

The obstacle course was for kids 10 years old and younger. With 21 different events, the boys and girls plowed through mud, ran through a cloud of color and splashed through a pool of slime.

Stacy Lyerly was responsible for setting up the event, but the inspiration came from her daughter, Sophie.

“I do a lot of Fun Runs for adults and my daughters cheered me on,” Lyerly said. “One day they said they wanted to do a Fun Run with me, but a 5K muddy obstacle course for a five-year-old isn’t really appropriate [Sophie] said ‘well I need one for myself.”

Students like Kaylee Rochelle took this opportunity to work with children and also help the community.

“I really enjoyed volunteering for the MADD Color Run because it was the first event DoSomething’s done that involved kids,” Rochelle said. “They were all really cute and it was fun to see them have such a good time because of our help.”

The volunteers watched the kids and made sure everything was done safely. Some of the younger children needed some help and they were there to help and cheer them on.

“I helped by holding up a tarp, which was one of the obstacles, for the kids to crawl under,” Rochelle said.

Even though the run was filled with obstacles, the most popular station was a rainbow cloud for the kids and the volunteers.IMG_9264

“I also threw the color powder on the kids. My favorite part was seeing the kids have so much fun and throwing the color,” Rochelle said.IMG_9225
